I have cavities. Should I consider dental fillings?

Yes. Dental fillings use durable materials like porcelain and ceramic to repair tooth enamel damaged by cavities, teeth grinding, and/or injury.

At Bayside Dental Arts: Andrey Ilyabayev, DDS, Dr. Ilyabayev uses tooth-colored, mercury-free fillings. Tooth-colored fillings reflect light like your natural enamel, allowing them to blend in with the rest of your smile. They’re stain resistant, can last more than 15 years, and present no risks to people with allergies.

What is the process for getting dental fillings?

Getting a dental filling takes 30-45 minutes.

Dr. Ilyabayev administers a local anesthetic. He uses a dental laser or drill to remove the decayed area of the tooth. He cleans and then rinses your tooth with an antiseptic, removing bacteria and debris.

If you have an exposed tooth root, Dr. Ilyabayev covers it. He then applies your porcelain or ceramic filling in layers. After applying each layer, Dr. Ilyabayev heats the material with a special light, causing it to harden or “cure.”

Once the top of your tooth is restored to its near-original condition, Dr. Ilyabayev checks your bite, trims away any excess material, and polishes your teeth.

What is recovery like after getting a filling?

After you get a filling, mild swelling and increased tooth sensitivity are normal. These symptoms usually go away within a week or two, but if they worsen, contact Dr. Ilyabayev. He can recommend desensitizing toothpaste, or he might apply a topical anesthetic to the top of your filling.

How long do fillings last?

Porcelain and ceramic fillings last an average of 10-15 years*, but you can extend their life by practicing good oral hygiene.

Dr. Ilyabayev recommends:

  • Flossing at least once daily
  • Brushing your teeth twice daily
  • Using a fluoride toothpaste
  • Visiting the office twice a year for professional teeth cleaning

Avoid habits like nail biting and chewing on ice cubes to prevent damage to your filling. If you play sports or grind your teeth, wear a mouthguard to protect your filling from the added wear-and-tear.
