Dentures vs. Implants: Pros, Cons, and Finding Your Perfect Fit

Jul 10, 2025
If you have missing teeth, you need a solution, and fortunately, you have options. But how do you choose between dental implants and dentures when restoring your smile?

Tooth loss can cause both cosmetic and functional problems, and leave you searching for answers. The two most popular options are dentures and dental implants. How do you know which option is best for you?

At Bayside Dental Arts in Queens, New York, Dr. Andrey Ilyabayev and our team evaluate your case, then may recommend dentures or dental implants — or a combination — to resolve the problem of missing teeth.

Here’s what you need to know about each of these options to find your perfect fit.

Dentures

Dentures can replace one, several, or all of the teeth. Here’s how they work.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures or dental bridges typically attach to teeth on either side of a gap in your smile. We can make some partial dentures removable, letting you take them out to clean them and put them back in.

Dental bridges may also be fixed in place semipermanently until they need repair or replacement.

Full dentures

If you’re missing all of the teeth in your upper arch, bottom arch, or both, you need full dentures. Basic full dentures are fabricated after we take a mold of your mouth. When they are ready, we show you how to apply adhesive to stick them in place, and how to remove and clean them every night.

Dental implants

Dental implants can replace a single tooth, a couple of teeth , or a full arch of teeth.

Individual implants

Dental implants include a post (usually made of titanium) that we put directly into the bone of your jaw. Once the bone heals around it (osseointegration), we create a restoration for one or more teeth and attach it permanently to the implant.

Implant-supported dentures

If you need dentures and have strong, healthy bone in your jaw, we can put just four dental implants in your upper or lower jaw. Then we create your denture and fix it permanently to the implants to replace your entire arch of teeth.

Making your choice

Here’s what you need to consider before choosing your tooth replacement option.

Age

If you’re 60 or younger and open to surgical options, you might choose dental implants. If you’re older, full traditional or partial dentures may feel like the more sensible option since they don’t require surgery.

Bone health

If your jawbone is healthy, we can go straight ahead with placing implants. If you don't have enough healthy bone, you may need to choose dentures or get a dental bone graft to make implants possible.

Cost

Traditional dentures used to be a lot cheaper than implants, but dental implants have become significantly less expensive over time. You might find that they make more sense financially, since they can last longer than regular dentures with proper care.

If you aren’t sure what you should do, come in for a consultation. We do a full exam and review X-rays before making our recommendation.
